Yahweh, let it not be with Your anger that You make a ruling on me or with Your fury that You discipline me!

א מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד לְהַזְכִּיר .ב יְהוָה אַל בְּקֶצְפְּךָ תוֹכִיחֵנִי וּבַחֲמָתְךָ תְיַסְּרֵנִי.

3 ὅτι τὰ βέλη σου ἐνεπάγησάν μοι, καὶ ἐπεστήρισας ἐπ᾿ ἐμὲ τὴν χεῖρά σου·

2 For thy weapons are fixed in me, and thou hast pressed thy hand heavily upon me.

2 For thy arrows are fastened in me: and thy hand hath been strong upon me.

2 For thine arrows stick fast[C] in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

2 For Your arrows have been brought down into me and Your hand has come down upon me.

ג כִּי חִצֶּיךָ נִחֲתוּ בִי וַתִּנְחַת[D] עָלַי יָדֶךָ.

4 οὐκ ἔστιν ἴασις ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς ὀργῆς σου, οὐκ ἔστιν εἰρήνη τοῖς ὀστέοις μου ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν μου.

3 For there is no health in my flesh because of X thine anger; there is no peace to my bones because of my sins.

5 ὅτι αἱ ἀνομίαι μου ὑπερῆραν τὴν κεφαλήν μου, ὡσεὶ φορτίον βαρὺ ἐβαρύνθησαν ἐπ᾿ ἐμέ.

4 For my transgressions have gone over mine head: they have pressed heavily upon me like a weighty burden.

6 προσώζεσαν [καὶ] ἐσάπησαν οἱ μώλωπές μου ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς ἀφροσύνης μου·

5 My bruises have become noisome [and] corrupt, because of my foolishness.

7 ἐταλαιπώρησα [καὶ] κατεκάμφθην ἕως τέλους, ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν σκυθρωπάζων ἐπορευόμην.

6 I have been wretched [and] bowed down continually: I went with a mourning countenance all the day.

8 ὅτι αἱ ψύαι μου ἐπλήσθησαν ἐμπαιγμῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἴασις ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου·

7 For my soul is filled with mockings; and there is no health in my flesh.

7 For my loins are filled with illusions; and there is no health in my flesh.

ח כִּי כְסָלַי מָלְאוּ נִקְלֶה[I] וְאֵין מְתֹם בִּבְשָׂרִי.

9 ἐκακώθην καὶ ἐταπεινώθην ἕως σφόδρα, ὠρυόμην ἀπὸ στεναγμοῦ τῆς καρδίας μου .

8 I have been afflicted and brought down exceedingly: I have roared for the groaning of my heart.

10 My heart is troubled, my strength has failed me; and the light of mine eyes X X is not with me.

12 οἱ φίλοι μου καὶ οἱ πλησίον μου ἐξ ἐναντίας μου ἤγγισαν [καὶ] ἔστησαν, καὶ οἱ ἔγγιστά μου ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἔστησαν·

11 My friends and my neighbours drew near before X X me, [and] stood still; and my nearest of kin stood afar off.

[1] And there are other lament psalms which do the same kind of thing, such as Psalm 6, 70, and 102.



[A] My original chart includes the NASB and NIV, but their copyright restrictions have forced me to remove them from the publicly-available edition of this chart. I have included the ESV in footnotes when it employs a word not already used by the KJV, NASB, or NIV. (NAW is my translation.) When a translation adds words not in the Hebrew text, but does not indicate it has done so by the use of italics (or greyed-out text), I put the added words in [square brackets]. When one version chooses a wording which is different from all the other translations, I underline it. When a version chooses a translation which, in my opinion, either departs too far from the root meaning of the Hebrew word or departs too far from the grammar form of the original text, I use strikeout. And when a version omits a word which is in the Hebrew text, I insert an X. (I also place an X at the end of a word if the original word is plural but the English translation is singular.) I occasionally use colors to help the reader see correlations between the various editions and versions when there are more than two different translations of a given word. Hebrew text that is colored purple matches the Dead Sea Scrolls, and variants between the DSS and the MT are noted in endnotes with the following exceptions: When a holem or qametz-hatuf or qibbutz pointing in the MT is represented in the DSS by a vav (or vice versa), or when a hireq pointing in the MT is represented in the DSS by a yod (the corresponding consonantal representation of the same vowel) – or vice versa, or when the tetragrammaton is spelled with paleo-Hebrew letters, I did not record it a variant. The only known Dead Sea Scroll containing Psalm 38 is 4Q83 (vs.14-23).

[D] The Masoretic pointing distinguishes the subject as the feminine “hand,” but the original Hebrew without the pointing could just as well be interpreted as second person masculine, as the Septuagint. The Syriac and Targums appear to support the Masoretic pointing, however. Nevertheless, whether the subject is the LORD or the LORD’s hand, it makes no difference in meaning. The previous instance of this verb in this verse is the only time it appears in the Niphal stem in the Bible.

[E] The Septuagint, Syriac, and Symmachus all translate “sins” plural instead of the MT singular, but it is not a significant difference in meaning.

[F] The Syriac also adds an “and” here and in the next verse, but not in v.6.

[G] NIV=brought very low, ESV=prostrate

[H] NIV=back, ESV=sides

[I] Niphal participle. The Qal form of this verb means “roasted,” but no Niphal form of this verb except for this one makes any sense with that meaning. All the other Niphal forms (including participal ones) are related to the meaning “make light/dishonor”

[J] NASB=agitation, NIV=anguish, ESV=tumult

[K] Niphal Perfect. There are only three other occurrences of this root in the OT, all in the Qal stem: Gen. 45:26 And they told him, saying, "Joseph is still alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt." And Jacob's heart stood still [faintedKVJ/stunnedNASB/became numbESV], because he did not believe them.” Ps. 77:3 “In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; My hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing [wearinessNASB/tiringNIV]; My soul refused to be comforted.” Hab. 1:4 “Therefore the law is powerless [ignoredNASB/paralyzedNIV], And justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.” (NKJV)

[L] The only other instance of this word in the OT is in Isaiah 5:30, where it is the “roaring of the sea.”

[M] Some editions of the LXX substitute “kai” (and) for Kurie (Lord), but this still does not change the addressee.

[N] The Vaticanus has this phrase, matching the MT, but it is omitted in the majority of LXX editions. It doesn’t change the meaning, however.

[O] Pealal perfect. This stem indicates rapid, repeated action. The verb root in its Qal stem is generally translated “trade/be a merchant,” but for this stem, BDB and Gesenius suggest “palpitate” as the translation. (The Pealal only occurs in four other places: Job 16:16, Psalm 45:3, Lam. 1:20, and Lam. 2:11.)
