· Job 6:11 “What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that I should endure? …. 14:1-5 Man, who is born of woman, Is short-lived and full of turmoil. Like a flower he comes forth and withers. He also flees like a shadow and does not remain… Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with Thee, And his limits Thou hast set so that he cannot pass.”
o And what should my attitude be as I relate to Him? It should be one of humility: I am puny - nothing compared to You, I am not God; I am just a creature made in the image of God and given a tiny lifespan compared to God’s eternity, I am the servant; He is the Master. I wait for Him, not Him for me. I am a guest – a tenant - on His property, dependent upon Him, but I will ask for His mercy, and He will generously give me what I ask.

5 Behold, thou hast made my days old; and my existence is as nothing before thee: nay, every man living is altogether vanity. Pause. |
5 (39:6) Behold thou hast made my days measureable. and my substance is as nothing before thee. And indeed all things are vanity: every man living. |

6 (38:7) μέντοιγε ἐν εἰκόνι διαπορεύεται ἄνθρωπος, πλὴν μάτην ταράσσονται· θησαυρίζει καὶ οὐ γινώσκει τίνι συνάξει αὐτά. |
6 Surely man walks in a shadow; nay, he is disquieted in vain: he lays up treasures, and knows not for whom he shall gather them. |
6 (39:7) Surely man passeth as an image: yea, and he is disquieted in vain. He storeth up: and he knoweth not for whom he shall gather these things. |

7 אַךְ-בְּצֶלֶם יִתְהַלֶּךְ-אִישׁ אַךְ-הֶבֶל יֶהֱמָיוּן יִצְבֹּר וְלֹא-יֵדַע מִי-אֹסְפָם: |
7 (38:8) καὶ νῦν τίς ἡ ὑπομονή μου; [οὐχὶ] ὁ κύριος X; [καὶ] ἡ ὑπόστασίς μου παρὰ σοῦ ἐστιν X. |
7 And now what is my expectation? [is it not] the Lord X? [and] my ground of hope is with thee X. Pause. |
7 (39:8) And now what is my hope? [is it not] the Lord? [and] my substance is with thee. |

7 So now, what have I waited for, my Master, my hope? It is for You! |

11 Thou chastenest man with rebukes for iniquity, and thou makest his life to consume away like a spider['s web]; nay, every man is [disquieted in] vain. Pause. |
11 (39:12) Thou hast corrected man for iniquity. And thou hast made his soul to waste away like a spider: surely [in] vain is any man [disquieted]. |
11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty[T] to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah. |

14 הָשַׁע[AA] מִמֶּנִּי וְאַבְלִיגָה[BB] בְּטֶרֶם אֵלֵךְ וְאֵינֶנִּי: |
[A] My original chart includes the NASB and NIV, but
their copyright restrictions have forced me to remove them from the
publicly-available edition of this chart. I have included the ESV in footnotes
when it employs a word not already used by the KJV, NASB, or NIV. (NAW is my
translation.) When a translation adds words not in the Hebrew text, but does
not indicate it has done so by the use of italics (or greyed-out text), I put
the added words in [square brackets]. When one version chooses a wording which
is different from all the other translations, I underline it. When a
version chooses a translation which, in my opinion, either departs too far from
the root meaning of the Hebrew word or departs too far from the grammar form of
the original text, I use strikeout. And when a version omits a word
which is in the Hebrew text, I insert an X. (I also place an X at the end of a
word if the original word is plural but the English translation is singular.) I
occasionally use colors to help the reader see correlations between the various
editions and versions when there are more than two different translations of a
given word. Hebrew text that is colored purple matches the Dead Sea Scrolls,
and variants between the DSS and the MT are noted in endnotes with the
following exceptions: When a holem or qametz-hatuf or qibbutz pointing
in the MT is represented in the DSS by a vav (or vice versa),
or when a hireq pointing in the MT is represented in the DSS by a yod
(the corresponding consonantal representation of the same vowel) – or vice
versa, or when the tetragrammaton is spelled with paleo-Hebrew letters, I
did not record it a variant. The only known Dead Sea Scroll containing Psalm 39
is 11Q8
(vs.12-13).
[B] NASB=choir director, NIV= director of music, ESV=choirmaster
[C] Qere spells with a “u” (לִידוּתוּן) and that is followed by the English versions, but the LXX and Vulgate use the Kethib with the “i” vowel in the middle. No difference in meaning though. Psalm 62 and 77 also have Jedithun’s name in the subtitle but with a different preposition ‘al instead of l- perhaps indicating a more indirect connection with a musical style associated with Jedithun.

My God, I call out daily – yet you do not answer, and nightly – yet there is no rest [KJV silent/NLT=relief] for me. But You are holy… (NAW) and Isaiah 6:5 And I said, "Woe to me!, For I am undone [verb form of dmh], for I am a man of unclean lips, and in the midst of a people of unclean lips I am dwelling, For my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of hosts!" (NAW)
[I] Several Hebrew mss + “and,” LXX, Syr., and Jerome’s Hebrew translation + “that”

[K] The Septuagint translates the Hebrew word for “takes a stand” as “living,” and the NIV decided to go with that, whereas the NAS followed the KJV in translating it “his best,” but here is an occasion where the ESV translated it best, I think.
